Undergraduate Artist Statement:
I am a multidisciplinary artist using painting, glassblowing, and installation to reexamine feminine shame in western society. My work depicts junk drawers, piles of dirty clothes, and other unappealing aspects of domesticity and the female experience. Personal clutter telling stories of a lowbrow lifestyle, as wells as motifs such as rosaries and bibles are embedded into the scene. These archetypes reference the archaic Christian influence on Western standards for women; a narrative that is shared by many femme-identifying Americans. Repeated imagery augments the idea of habits, addictions, and other repeated rituals and compulsive behaviors. In addition to traditional painting on canvas, I create blown glass, including sex toys and parodies of Venetian glassware. Throughout all media utilized, I’ve juxtaposed lowbrow culture with high quality materials and some of the most classical styles of making. By inviting viewers into an environment that shamelessly embraces sexuality and disorder, I neutralize feelings of shame that are ingrained in the female experience and celebrate rebelling against tradition.
